What is the role of the President in the Indian political system

Explain the powers and functions of the President of India, and his/her role in the Indian political system.
The President of India is the head of state and the commander-in-chief of the nation’s armed forces. The main role of the President is largely ceremonial, but he or she still plays an important role in the country's political system. Some of the main powers and functions of the President are:
  • Appoints the Prime Minister, who in turn appoints the Council of Ministers.
  • Summons and prorogues sessions of the Parliament and dissolves the Lok Sabha (Lower House).
  • Appoints the Chief Justice and judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.
  • Has veto power over bills passed by Parliament.
  • Has the power to grant pardons, reprieves, and respites for offenses against the Union government.
  • Receives ambassadors and other diplomats from foreign countries.
  • Serves as the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces and can declare war or conclude peace, subject to the approval of Parliament.
  • Safeguards the Constitution and all laws, and ensures their faithful execution.
Overall, the President serves as a key figurehead in India’s political system with a range of important powers and responsibilities.
