What measures have been taken by India to manage disasters

India has been hit hard by natural disasters such as cyclones and earthquakes.
India has implemented several measures to manage disasters, both natural and man-made. Here are some of them:
  • The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was established in 2005 to prepare and implement policies for disaster management at the national level.
  • India has a well-coordinated disaster response system that involves national, state, and local-level agencies. Each state has its own disaster management authority to deal with disasters at the local level.
  • The government has also set up a network of early warning systems to alert people about impending disasters, including for tsunamis, cyclones, and droughts.
  • Several disaster resilience measures have been undertaken, including constructing earthquake-resistant buildings, flood control structures, and erosion control measures near coastlines.
  • The Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiative was launched in 2016 to address disaster risk reduction at the community level. It involves capacity building of communities, institutions, and stakeholders.
  • The government has established relief camps and provided food, water, and medical aid to people affected by disasters, as well as offering financial assistance to rebuild homes and businesses.
  • India also actively participates in regional and international disaster management initiatives and provides aid to countries affected by natural disasters.
Despite these efforts, India continues to face challenges in managing disasters due to its vast size and diverse geography. However, these measures are an important step towards building disaster resilience and reducing loss of life and property.
