Pressure from human rights activists and organizations to bring justice to the victims' families 3. A growing international concern about alleged human rights abuses in the state 4. The Supreme Court's intervention in the matter and instructing the CBI to take over the cases The CBI SIT was formed in 2017, following the Supreme Court's direction in 2016 to investigate the alleged extra-judicial killings in Manipur. The team comprises six officers and is led by a Superintendent of Police. So far, they have investigated 42 cases and chargesheeted 12 police officials for their alleged involvement in fake encounters and extra-judicial killings. The formation of the CBI SIT aims to ensure an impartial investigation and bring justice to the victims' families.
