What measures can be taken to make Railways more user-friendly for persons with disabilities in India

The Centre has released draft guidelines to make Railways more user-friendly for persons with disabilities.
To make railways more user-friendly for persons with disabilities in India, the following measures can be taken:
  • Accessibility: Provide ramps, elevators, and accessible toilets at railway stations to assist persons with mobility challenges.
  • Platform facilities: Ensure that platforms are equipped with tactile flooring, auditory and visual announcements, and handrails.
  • Train facilities: Designate special coaches equipped with ramps, priority seating, and accessible toilets for persons with disabilities.
  • Assistance services: Provide trained staff to assist persons with disabilities during boarding, alighting, and in emergencies.
  • Information accessibility: Display important information in Braille, large print, and audio formats for persons with visual impairments.
  • Communication: Install accessible ticket counters and information boards with clear signage and symbols.
  • Training and sensitization: Train railway staff to understand the needs of persons with disabilities and provide them with respectful and courteous service.
  • User feedback: Establish a system to gather feedback from persons with disabilities and address their specific concerns and suggestions.
Implementing these measures would greatly enhance the experience and accessibility of railways for persons with disabilities in India.
