What measures can be taken to enhance disaster management in India

Evaluate the current state of disaster management in India and suggest measures that can be taken to enhance disaster management capability of the country.
Measures that can be taken to enhance disaster management in India are:
  • Creating awareness: There is a need to create awareness among the public about natural disasters, emergency evacuation plans and first aid knowledge. This can be done by conducting regular training programmes and awareness campaigns.
  • Strengthening the disaster management authority: There is a need to establish a strong and efficient disaster management authority that will work in collaboration with the central and state governments to manage disasters effectively and efficiently.
  • Improving early warning systems: There is a need to develop and improve early warning systems such as weather forecasting, river water level monitoring, seismic sensors, etc. It can help in mitigating the impact of disasters by providing warnings to people about the potential danger.
  • Investment in disaster mitigation infrastructure: The government should invest in building disaster-resistant infrastructure such as flood barriers, quake-resistant buildings, cyclone shelters, and other physical infrastructure.
  • Improvement in communication: It is imperative to establish effective communication channels between local authorities, disaster management agencies, and the public. This would help disseminate information quickly and efficiently.
The current state of disaster management in India is not very satisfactory. Though the ongoing pandemic has highlighted the need to improve disaster preparedness and management. India has been hit with several natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, droughts, and cyclones, which have resulted in significant damage to life and property. The above measures can strengthen India's disaster management capabilities by developing a more efficient system to prevent and manage disasters, and mitigate the impact.
