The government of India has taken several measures for disaster management. At the national level, the following initiatives have been taken:
  • Establishment of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for policy formulation, coordination and implementation of disaster management plans.
  • Creation of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) that specializes in swift response during disasters and also engages in search and rescue operations.
  • Implementation of the Early Warning System for Tsunami, Cyclone, and Floods.
  • Strengthening of the infrastructure and communication network to aid rescue operations.
At the state level, the following initiatives have been taken:
  • Establishment of State Disaster Management Authorities for planning, coordination, and execution of disaster management activities.
  • Formulation of State Disaster Management Plans.
  • Providing disaster response training to state and local authorities.
