What are the various measures taken by the government to control the rising tomato prices in India

The rising tomato prices have been a matter of concern for the common population.
The Indian government has taken several measures to control the rising tomato prices in the country, some of which are:
  • The government has increased the import duty on tomatoes from neighboring countries to reduce the influx of cheaper tomato imports that are affecting the prices of Indian tomatoes.
  • The government has also decided to release 50,000 tonnes of tomato from its buffer stock to stabilize the prices.
  • The government has encouraged state governments to carry out their own measures to ensure the availability of tomatoes at reasonable prices.
  • The government has also asked farmers to switch to alternative crops like pulses, dairy, and fisheries to reduce their dependency on tomato cultivation.
  • The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) has directed traders to avoid hoarding and maintain a supply-demand balance in the market.
  • The government has created a price monitoring cell that constantly tracks the tomato prices across the country and takes corrective measures as and when required.
These measures are expected to provide relief to the common population by reducing the prices of tomatoes.
