What are the major findings of the ASER study regarding the basic maths skills of Indian youth

According to the ASER study, more than 50% of Indian youth are struggling with basic maths.
Based on the ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) study, the major findings regarding the basic math skills of Indian youth are as follows:
  • Over 50% of Indian youth between the ages of 14 and 18 are struggling with basic arithmetic skills.
  • These findings are consistent across rural and urban regions.
  • The study showed that 5 out of 10 students in this age group could not perform basic division calculations.
  • Furthermore, around 27% of students in the same age bracket were unable to perform basic subtraction.
  • The findings also revealed that only around 43% of students could correctly answer a three-digit multiplication problem.
  • Even when provided with a calculator, a significant number of students found it challenging to perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • This lack of foundational math skills is a cause for concern as it indicates a gap in the quality of education being provided to Indian youth.
These findings underscore the need for targeted efforts and interventions to improve math education in India, especially at the foundational level, in order to equip students with the necessary skills for future success.
