What are the constitutional provisions for protecting the rights of citizens in India

Examine the constitutional provisions for protecting the rights of citizens in India and discuss the challenges in their effective implementation.
The Constitution of India provides various provisions for protecting the fundamental rights of citizens. These include:
  • Article 14 - Right to equality before the law and equal protection of laws
  • Article 15 - Prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth
  • Article 19 - Right to freedom of speech and expression, assembly, association, movement and residence
  • Article 21 - Right to life and personal liberty
  • Article 25 - Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion
However, the effective implementation of these provisions faces several challenges, such as lack of awareness and illiteracy among citizens, corruption in the judiciary and law enforcement, and political interference in the administration of justice. Moreover, it is not uncommon to see instances where marginalized communities and vulnerable groups are denied their constitutional rights due to societal prejudices and discrimination.
