How is the Indian Government tackling the issue of spurious medicines and what steps is it taking to maintain quality control

Examine the issue of spurious medicines in India and the measures taken by the government to ensure the safety and efficacy of medicines available in the market.
The Indian government has implemented several measures to tackle the issue of spurious medicines and maintain quality control:
  • The formation of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) to regulate the quality of drugs and ensure their efficacy.
  • Strengthening of the regulatory framework for drug manufacturers through the enactment of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which mandates inspections of drug manufacturing facilities.
  • Setting up of a National Drug Authority to control and regulate the import, manufacture, and distribution of drugs.
  • Launching the Pharmaco-vigilance Programme of India (PvPI) to monitor the safety of drugs and report adverse drug reactions.
  • Implementation of electronic tracking systems to track the movement of medicines from the manufacturer to the consumer, increasing traceability and transparency.
Despite these measures, the issue of spurious medicines persists, and the government needs to take stricter measures to address the problem. These may include harsher penalties for those found guilty of manufacturing or distributing counterfeit or sub-standard medicines and increased regulation of the marketing and sale of medicines.
