Discuss the challenges India faces regarding disaster management and suggest measures to enhance the country's response to natural calamities.
India is highly vulnerable to natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, landslides, and cyclones. However, the country is facing many challenges in effectively dealing with such disasters. Challenges: 1. Lack of awareness and readiness among people. 2. Lack of proper infrastructure and resources. 3. The incapability of the government to efficiently handle emergencies. 4. Poor coordination among various agencies and stakeholders. Measures to enhance response: 1. Increasing public education and awareness regarding disaster management and early warning systems. 2. Enhancing infrastructure, resource mobilization and capacity building of emergency response forces. 3. Developing effective emergency response protocols with clear roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders. 4. Introducing mechanisms for better coordination among various stakeholders and utilizing technology at every stage. 5. Implementing policies and programmes that would ensure a more inclusive and equitable response towards vulnerable populations. Additionally, India can enhance its response to natural disasters through international collaborations and partnerships. A more systematic and coordinated approach with adequate investments in disaster management can go a long way in mitigating the impact of natural calamities.
