Why is the use of EVMs creating distrust in the voting system in India
EVMs creating ‘distrust’, why not vote through ballot papers, asks Akhilesh Yadav
The use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has created distrust in the voting system in India for several reasons:
- 1. Lack of transparency: One of the main concerns is the lack of transparency in the functioning of EVMs. Many critics argue that the technology used in EVMs is not open to public scrutiny, making it susceptible to hacking and manipulation.
- 2. Lack of verifiability: EVMs do not provide a paper trail or physical evidence of the vote cast. This makes it difficult to completely verify the accuracy of the results, as there is no way to independently cross-check the electronic records.
- 3. Technical glitches: There have been instances of EVMs malfunctioning during elections. These incidents raise doubts about the reliability of the machines and whether they can accurately record and count votes.
- 4. Limited accountability: The lack of accountability in the storage and transportation of EVMs has also led to concerns. There have been instances of EVMs going missing or being tampered with, raising doubts about the integrity of the voting process.
