What steps have been taken by the Centre to control the price rise of tomato in India

As the price of tomato shoots up, opposition has criticized the policies of the Centre.
The Centre has taken several steps to control the price rise of tomato in India. Some of these steps are:
  • Imposing a stock limit on traders and stockists to prevent hoarding of tomatoes and artificial price hike.
  • Encouraging tomato imports from neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka and Pakistan to bridge the supply gap.
  • Setting up a task force to suggest ways to boost tomato productivity and reduce wastage in the supply chain.
  • Increasing the availability of tomato seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to farmers to enhance tomato cultivation in the country.
  • Liaising with state governments to ensure smooth transportation of tomatoes from production centres to markets and mandis.
Despite these efforts, the opposition has criticized the Centre's policies, stating that they are inadequate and not addressing the root cause of the problem. Experts also suggest that long-term measures such as improved irrigation facilities, better storage facilities, and promotion of alternative crops should be taken to mitigate the effects of price rise of tomatoes.
