What steps has the Government of India taken to tackle publishing of obscene content on OTT platforms
The government has blocked 18 OTT platforms for publishing obscene and vulgar content.
- The Government of India introduced the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 to regulate content on OTT platforms.
- OTT platforms are required to self-regulate their content and classify it into age-based categories: U (Universal), U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult).
- Content that is deemed obscene, vulgar, or sexually explicit is strictly prohibited and must not be made available for viewing.
- The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has the authority to block access to OTT platforms that fail to comply with the guidelines or indulge in publishing objectionable content.
- Due to non-compliance, the government has blocked 18 OTT platforms for violating the prescribed regulations.
