What measures are taken to ensure environmental clearances in India and how long does it take

Information on how environmental clearances are given in India and the time it takes for the process.
Environmental clearances in India are necessary to ensure that development projects like industrial plants, mines, and infrastructural projects don't cause harm to the environment and the people living in the area. The measures taken to ensure these clearances are as follows:
  • Projects need to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) before starting.
  • The project proponent needs to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.
  • The EIA report is evaluated by the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) and then forwarded to the MoEFCC for final clearance.
  • Public hearings are conducted where the locals can express their concerns regarding the project.
  • After receiving clearance, the project needs to follow strict environmental conditions related to air quality, water resources, and waste management.
The time taken for this process is typically around 180 days, however, it may take longer for larger or more complex projects. This timeline can be expedited in cases of urgency or national importance.
