What measures are being taken to prevent trafficking of organs in India
The organ transplant body has written to States, calling for strict action to prevent organ trafficking.
- Strict regulatory framework: The Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) was enacted in 1994 to regulate organ transplantation and prevent organ trafficking. It sets rules for organ donation, retrieval, and transplantation.
- Government monitoring: The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) was established to oversee transplantation activities and ensure compliance with THOTA. NOTTO maintains a national registry of donors and recipients to ensure transparency.
- Awareness campaigns: Various awareness programs and campaigns are conducted to educate the public about organ transplantation, the importance of legal organ donation, and the consequences of organ trafficking.
- Strengthening enforcement: The organ transplant body has written to States, urging them to take strict action against organ trafficking. This includes conducting raids on potential illegal organ transplant centers and prosecuting offenders.
- International cooperation: India collaborates with international organizations like Interpol and World Health Organization (WHO) to strengthen efforts to prevent organ trafficking and illegal transplantation.
