  • The Chief Justice of India can hold office until he attains the age of 65 years.
  • However, he may resign or can be removed by the President on the grounds of proved misbehavior or incapacity before completing his term.
Appointment Process:
  • The President of India appoints the Chief Justice of India based on the recommendation of the collegium of Supreme Court judges.
  • The collegium consists of the Chief Justice of India and four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.
  • The appointment is made according to the seniority of the judges, provided the person is considered fit to hold the post of Chief Justice of India.
  • If the Chief Justice of India is to be succeeded by someone junior to him, then the reasons for doing so have to be recorded in writing and communicated to the concerned judge.
