As per the latest report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), India has moved up by four spots to rank 112th in the Global Gender Gap Index 2021, from its 2020 ranking of 116th.

• India ranked below its neighboring countries - Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, who stand at 65th, 106th and 116th positions respectively.
• The report evaluated gender disparities across four key areas - economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.
• India showed improvement in all four areas, but the largest and most significant gains were in the area of political empowerment.
• The report also highlighted that despite narrowing the gender gap in the number of years women lead countries as heads of state or government, women are still underrepresented in these positions globally.

Overall, while India has made progress in narrowing the gender gap, there is still much more work to be done to achieve full gender equality and empower women in all areas of society.
