What is the role of Governor in Indian Polity

Enumerate the powers, functions and responsibilities of Governor in Indian polity.
The Governor is an important figurehead in the Indian Polity. Although largely a ceremonial post, the Governor has certain powers and functions that make them an important part of the government machinery. Some of the powers, responsibilities and functions of Governor are:
  • Appoints the Chief Minister, other Ministers and Advocate General of the state.
  • Convenes, prorogues and dissolves the State Legislative Assembly.
  • Addresses the State Legislative Assembly at the beginning of the first session each year.
  • Acts as a constitutional head of the state.
  • Represents the state government in certain ceremonial and diplomatic occasions.
  • Assents to bills passed by the State Legislature before they become Acts.
  • Promulgates Ordinances when the State Legislature is not in session.
  • Decides the cases of mercy petitions received from individuals against death sentences.
  • Acts as a Chancellor of the State Universities.
