What is the method by which the Indian government manages natural disasters

Explain the measures taken by the Indian government in the wake of natural disasters and to what extent they have been effective in mitigating damage.
The Indian government manages natural disasters through the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Here are some of the measures taken by the Indian government:
  • Formation of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) at the national level and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) at the state level.
  • Preparation of Disaster Management Plans at national, state, and district levels.
  • Training and capacity building of Disaster Response Teams (DRTs) and Volunteers.
  • Establishment of Early Warning Systems for cyclones, floods, earthquakes, etc.
  • Creation of various funds such as National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to provide financial assistance to the affected people.
  • Providing relief and rescue measures during disaster situations such as evacuation, distribution of food, clothing, and medicine.
  • Rehabilitation and reconstruction of affected areas after the disaster.
These measures have been effective in mitigating damage to a large extent. For example, during the Cyclone Fani in 2019, around 1.2 million people were evacuated in Odisha which resulted in minimal human casualties. However, there is still scope for improvement in the implementation of these measures to ensure better disaster management in the future.
