What is the impact of the discontinuation of sale of rice and wheat to States under OMSS by the Centre, on the price rise issue

Discuss the steps taken by the Centre to control price rise, especially after discontinuing sale of rice and wheat to States under OMSS scheme.
The discontinuation of sale of rice and wheat to States under OMSS scheme by the Centre has had a considerable impact on the price rise issue in the country. Several factors such as low rainfall, hike in fuel prices, and disruptions in supply chains have led to increased prices of essential commodities like rice and wheat. To control price rise, the Centre has taken several steps. Some of them are:
  • Export restrictions on essential commodities such as onions, potato, and pulses.
  • Increasing minimum support prices (MSPs) for various crops to ensure fair prices for farmers.
  • Imposing stock limits on essential commodities to prevent hoarding by traders.
  • Encouraging farmers to adopt methods of efficient water management to reduce crop losses.
The Centre has also introduced the Affordable WHEAT (Welfare and Health Enhancing Assistance for Tamilians) scheme in Tamil Nadu to provide quality wheat flour at a reasonable price to low-income families. However, these measures have not completely eradicated the price rise issue in the country. With the ongoing pandemic and other external factors, the Centre needs to continue to monitor and implement effective strategies to control price rise and ensure affordable food for all.
