What are the steps taken by the Maharashtra government to curb pollution in Mumbai

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that efforts are being made on a war footing to curb pollution in Mumbai.
Here are the steps taken by the Maharashtra government to curb pollution in Mumbai:
  • Introduction of the 'Odd-Even' rule for cars to reduce vehicular emissions: On specific days, cars whose license plates end in odd or even numbers are allowed to ply on the roads, aiming to reduce traffic volume, congestion, and pollution.
  • Promotion of public transportation: The government has been encouraging the use of public transport by improving its efficiency, expanding the network, and providing subsidies. This helps reduce the number of vehicles on the road and, consequently, pollution levels.
  • Implementation of stringent emission norms: The state government has been actively enforcing stricter emission standards for industries, vehicles, and power plants to curb pollution and improve air quality.
  • Promotion of cleaner fuels: Efforts have been made to promote the use of cleaner fuels like compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to reduce pollution caused by burning fossil fuels.
  • Mandating rooftop solar panels: To reduce dependence on fossil fuel-generated electricity, the government has made it mandatory for certain buildings to install rooftop solar panels, promoting renewable energy and reducing pollution.
  • Increased focus on waste management: The government is emphasizing efficient waste management practices, including waste segregation, recycling, and proper disposal, to reduce pollution caused by improper waste handling.
The Maharashtra government is committed to taking these measures to combat pollution on a war footing and improve the environment in Mumbai.
