What are the major challenges faced by the bird species in Tamil Nadu

As many as 86 bird species found in Tamil Nadu found to be in ‘rapid decline’, says nationwide report.
The major challenges faced by bird species in Tamil Nadu can be summarized as follows:
  • Habitat Loss: Increasing urbanization, deforestation, and conversion of natural habitats for agriculture and infrastructure development lead to the loss of critical nesting, feeding, and breeding grounds for birds.
  • Human Activities: Intensive farming practices, pesticide use, and illegal hunting adversely affect birds. Pollution from industries and urban areas also impact the health and survival of bird populations.
  • Climate Change: Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and changing weather patterns disrupt bird migration, breeding cycles, and food sources.
  • Invasive Species: The introduction of non-native species, such as predators or competitor birds, disrupt the balance of ecosystems and threaten local bird species.
  • Infrastructure Development: Expansion of roads, power lines, and wind farms can cause collision hazards for birds or disrupt their flight patterns.
  • Lack of Awareness and Conservation Efforts: Limited public awareness about the importance of bird conservation and the absence of concrete conservation measures contribute to the challenges faced by bird species in Tamil Nadu.
These challenges necessitate immediate conservation actions and policy decisions to protect and restore bird habitats and populations in Tamil Nadu.
