What are the key challenges in the Health sector in India

Identify the major challenges faced by the Health sector in India and discuss the measures taken by the Government to address them.
The Health sector in India faces multiple challenges that hinder its growth and development. Some of the major challenges are as follows:
  • Lack of adequate public health infrastructure and facilities in rural areas of the country
  • Shortage of healthcare professionals like doctors and nurses, especially in remote areas
  • Low government expenditure on healthcare, leading to inadequate funding and investment in the sector
  • High out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare leading to financial strain on families and individuals
  • Increase in lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and coronary artery disease
  • Overcrowding in public hospitals, shortages of medical supplies, inadequate sanitation and hygiene facilities
To address these challenges, the Indian government has undertaken several measures, such as providing affordable health insurance schemes, increasing the healthcare budget, setting up more medical colleges and institutions to produce more healthcare professionals. They have also introduced various welfare schemes like Ayushman Bharat Yojana that cover primary health care and treatment for critical illnesses for the poor and underprivileged sections of society. The government has also initiated immunization drives and other health awareness programs in the country. These measures aim to enhance the quality of healthcare services in the country and make it more accessible for all.
