What are the implications of the Uniform Civil Code on Muslim Personal Law

Understand the impact of the Uniform Civil Code on Muslim Personal Law and the response of the Muslim body to the Law Commission's move.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) seeks to replace personal laws of different religions with a common set of rules governing marriage, divorce, adoption, and inheritance among others. One of the main implications of UCC on Muslim Personal Law is that it would lead to the abolition of triple talaq and polygamy, which are unique to the Muslim community. The Muslim community has expressed strong opposition to UCC, terming it as a threat to their religious freedom. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has called for boycotting the Law Commission's move towards UCC and has argued that personal laws are an integral part of their religion. The UCC would also empower women and ensure gender equality, which is not completely guaranteed under Muslim Personal Law. However, it would require a comprehensive consultation with all stakeholders before implementation to consider the diverse cultural, social, and religious customs of the Indian society and act in a way that respects the choices of individuals and communities.
