The Ministry of Human Resource Development, with an aim to revamp the education system in India, has come up with a new draft NEP. What are the features of the new draft National Education Policy (NEP) 2020?
- Early Childhood Care and Education: Children in the age group of 3-6 years will have access to free and compulsory pre-school education.
- School Education: New curriculum framework to be established, with a focus on experiential learning, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary approach. Board exams to be reformed.
- Higher Education: Single regulator to be established for higher education. Multiple entry and exit options for degree courses. Four-year undergraduate program with exit options.
- Teacher Education: A four-year integrated course to be introduced for teachers. Periodic certification of teachers required.
- Educational Governance: National Education Commission to be established. Higher Education Commission to replace University Grants Commission.
- Financing Education: Public spending on education to be increased to 6% of GDP. Private education institutions to be regulated.
