What are the challenges faced by the Indian healthcare system

Delineate the challenges that the Indian healthcare system faces and suggest measures to overcome these challenges.
The Indian healthcare system faces several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of resources, and insufficient funding. The following are some of the challenges faced by the Indian healthcare system:
  • Shortage of Healthcare Professionals: India’s healthcare system is short of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare personnel. According to WHO, India has only 0.8 doctors per 1000 people which is quite low compared to the world average of 1.6 doctors per 1000 people. It may lead to the poor quality of healthcare and burden on existing doctors and nurses.
  • Limited Access to Affordable Healthcare: A substantial proportion of the Indian population is unable to afford healthcare. Many individuals face financial barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare services. This limits their access to quality healthcare and leads to poor health outcomes.
  • Inadequate healthcare infrastructure and resources: The healthcare infrastructure in India is insufficient, particularly in rural and remote areas. Many healthcare facilities lack adequate resources, such as medical equipment, medication, and even essential supplies like electricity and water.
  • Disease Burden: India has a high burden of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, as well as non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. This burden can overburden an already struggling healthcare system.
  • Insufficient Funding: The Indian healthcare system faces insufficient funding. The government spend only around 1.3% of its GDP on healthcare, which is too low. This inadequate funding can lead to a shortage of resources, commoditized care and affect the quality of healthcare services provided.
To tackle these challenges, India needs to focus on improving its healthcare infrastructure, increasing the number of healthcare professionals and improving its funding. The government should take necessary measures to improve access to affordable healthcare services and incentivize healthcare professionals to work in rural and remote areas. The government should also focus on promoting preventive health measures and implementing measures to control the communicable and non-communicable disease burden. Overall it will take a comprehensive approach from different people in the society and stakeholders together to build a better health over time.
