The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was granted National Party Status by the Election Commission of India in 2014.
National Party Status is a designation given to political parties that meet certain criteria and have a significant presence at the national level. It provides certain privileges and recognition to the party in terms of representation, allocation of election symbols, and financial assistance.
The procedures to obtain National Party Status are as follows:
1. Performance in General Elections: The party must secure at least 6% of the valid votes in four or more states, and win at least four seats in the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections.
2. Performance in Legislative Assembly Elections: If the party is recognized as a state party in at least four states, it can be granted National Party Status regardless of its performance in the General Elections.
3. Continuous Performance: The party must maintain its performance in subsequent elections to retain its National Party Status.
Once these criteria are met, the party can apply to the Election Commission of India, which evaluates and grants the National Party Status if all requirements are fulfilled.
