According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report for 2021, India has slipped to the 140th position among 156 countries. Here are some of the key points about India's performance in the report:
  • India has slipped four places compared to its 2020 ranking of 112th among 153 countries.
  • India scored 0.62 points out of 1 in the index, which measures the extent of gender-based gaps in areas such as political empowerment, economic participation, and education.
  • India ranked the worst in the world in terms of women’s health and survival, with a score of just 0.36 out of 1.
  • India performed relatively better in terms of political empowerment (scored 0.23), which measures the number of women in parliament and ministerial positions.
  • However, India's score for economic participation and opportunity was also poor (scored 0.36), indicating that women continue to face significant barriers in accessing employment and economic opportunities.
Overall, the report highlights that India has a long way to go in addressing gender-based inequalities in various domains to enhance its global stature.
