How has government's approach in Disaster Management policy changed over the years in India and what are the benefits of this approach

Examine the changes in India's Disaster Management policy over the years and explain the advantages of a more holistic approach.
Over the years, India's Disaster Management policy has evolved from a reactive to a more proactive approach, with a focus on prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Some of the key changes include:
  • Establishment of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs)
  • Development of National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP)
  • Focus on community involvement and capacity building
  • Increased use of technology and early warning systems
  • Integration of disaster management with development planning
The benefits of this holistic approach include faster and more effective response to disasters, reduced damage to life and property, improved coordination between various agencies, increased awareness and preparedness among communities, and greater resilience to future disasters. It has also helped in reducing the economic impact of disasters and in ensuring sustainable development. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of strengthening the implementation of policies and building a culture of disaster preparedness.
