What is the significance of Uniform Civil Code in India

What is the current stand of Law Commission and Committee in this matter?
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a proposal to replace personal laws based on religious scriptures and customs with a common set of laws applicable to all citizens of India regardless of their religion. The primary objective of this proposal is to unify the country by removing the existing divisions on the basis of religion and ensuring equal rights to all individuals. The current stand of the Law Commission and Committee over the UCC is as follows:
  • The 21st Law Commission of India has submitted a report in 2018 expressing the need for UCC and stating that it will serve the principles of justice, equality, and gender harmony.
  • However, it did not provide a draft of the code and left it to the government to create one.
  • The Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions has also recommended the implementation of UCC.
  • Opponents argue that personal laws represent cultural and religious practices and cannot be replaced by a common civil code. Some also believe that the government should first focus on reforming existing personal laws before drafting a new one.
  • Currently, the government has not taken any steps towards implementing the UCC, and the matter remains a subject of debate.
Overall, the debate surrounding the UCC is controversial and has various arguments on both sides.
